New to the Neighborhood

New to the Neighborhood

CP 7050 and 7052 head past 21st Street in Superior, WI with a 53 car transfer for Stinson Yard on the afternoon of June 30, 2020. The fog was moving in and off the lake but I did get some sun here on these rebuilds.

These SD70ACUs were returning from Duluth and picked up at 28th Street. Once they arrived Stinson they would make up the outbound 393 road train, which would depart for the Twin Cities under darkness and fog.

First time I've seen these rebuilt 7000s run past my normal CP shooting spot near my house in Superior.

Slow Moving Meet at Grassy Point

Great Lakes Fleet John G. Munson heads to C. Reiss in West Duluth as pair of BNSF Geeps (2647-1505) bring grain empties to Superior on June 28, 2020. Both are moving slowly here, as Munson finishes up its trip to unload limestone at C. Reiss, while the BNSF heads towards the Grassy Point swing bridge which closed after the boat's passage.

High Tonnage Coal Double at Carlton

High Tonnage Coal Double at Carlton

BNSF 9121 East rolls through the junction at Chub Lake (Carlton, MN) with 256 coal loads on June 28, 2020. BNSF starting running coal trains again to the Midwest Energy dock in Superior in late May. Since then, roughly half of them that have come across the Brainerd Sub. have been "coal doubles" like this one. When they reach the Coal Runner in Superior the trains are split up for dumping at MERC.

Details for this CSCMSUD0-63A: BNSF 9121 & 9234 upfront, then 138 coal loads, followed by 4 mid-train DPs (5720/9061/4288/9324), then another 128 loads with 3930/8758 shoving on the rear. The big numbers on this coal double: 8 units, 256 loads, 36,440 tons, and 14,185 feet. Even with all the high tonnage trains coming into the Twin Ports over the years, I can't say I've shot a train like this.

Brainerd Local

Brainerd Local

BNSF's Brainerd Local blasts out of Superior, WI with 13 cars on the morning of June 28, 2020. This train usually runs twice per week on Wed. or Thurs. and Sundays. It’s an SD40-2 and GP28M combo (1663/1511) on this Sunday morning. Looking at the train I believe the first 3 lumber cars are for Lake States Lumber in Aitkin and the 10 gondolas are for Crow Lake Recycling at MacMillen (the former OSB plant at Deerwood).

The MacMillen name in the timetable (now a "location other than station") is interesting. It must refer to the MacMillan Bloedel company that started the Deerwood OSB plant in the early 90s, which Weyerhauser would eventually close in 2007. The recycling company took over the property a few years later and ships out the gons. Even with a different spelling, the old MacMillen name has held on with the railroad through the years.

This 1663 West would take the siding at Chub Lake to meet at coal load off the Brainerd Sub.

BNSF 1568 at State Line

BNSF 1568 at State Line

The outbound Rapids Turn runs west at the Wisconsin/Minnesota border with 15 cars on the evening of June 23, 2020. I'm standing in Minnesota and the farm is in Wisconsin. The tracks here weave back and forth between the two states for a few miles.

It says it is an SD40-2 on the frame but this ex-ATSF SD45-2 sticks out among the normal SD40-2s in the Superior Pool. It usually has been assigned to the Allouez Yard but recently has stretched its legs running on the mainline with the Rapids Local. Next stop will be a set-out at Cloquet before continuing to Grand Rapids in darkness.

High Hood Heading Out of Duluth

High Hood Heading Out of Duluth

ILSX 245 and DMIR 193 run east on the North Shore Scenic and under 21st Avenue East in Duluth, MN on June 25, 2020. The primary mission of this North Shore Scenic freight move was to pull stored DDG hoppers off the line but they grabbed these 5 hoppers from the Depot area to get them out of way for passenger service starting again on July 1. This was my first time shooting the former NP GP9 since it arrived Duluth and the first high hood I have shot in quite a while.
