Citirail GEs on NSM Last Month

Rewind back to August...

A month ago, Northshore Mining got their second furnace up and running again at Silver Bay, making the morning trips a regular thing out of Babbitt after just running one train a day after the leased Citirail GEs arrived.  I made some trips up there in August for the morning crude.  Here is a couple of shots from that first Saturday morning standing along with Dave, Todd, and Lester.

Interestingly NSM's road frequency (451.725) can be heard from my base scanner in Superior.  Never paid much attention to it with the same ol' SD40s, but once the GEs were running I started to listen to figure out a pattern. The morning train tends to leave Babbitt around 0600.  Heard the 1204 call to leave Babbitt right after 0600 on the 20th, so made my way up to Beaver Bay in the fog and haze.  The fog cleared near Railfan Rock and the GEs still added some color on a milky, hot day (already 80F at 0845).

Made another trip when they left on another morning at 0635 with 157 loads a couple of days later.

Will try to return in the fall as the colorful GEs are on my list when the trees turn.  Hope they won't be running them as 1x1 DPU trains as two units up front looks better, but I guess we'll see. Too bad it is such a short season up here for fall color.
