Saturday Night Special - Red Ore on WC

dmir227's picture

On a September day fifteen years ago I captured one of the natural "red" ore trains operated to Gary by the DM&IR, WC and EJ&E. This ore was from the last operating natural ore mine (Auburn) and until they built a drying/screening plant in 1996 the ore moved by rail where it wouldn't pose handling issues in the docks. After 1995 the ore would flow through Dock 1 in Two Harbors. They were fun to catch while they lasted (the low side Missabe regulars heaped high with red ore was like a time machine).
