We Don't Use Locomotives to Plow Snow...

That was the quote from Tom Sample, DM&IR's CMO at the time, when I asked him on a tour why they didn't put the pilot plows on the SD38ACs anymore. He said MOW should be out clearing the tracks with their equipment. I recalled that quote when I came across this shot taken in 2001 as a five-unit PRS set was being used to clear Proctor Hill of heavy snow (likely needed to get limestone up). In fairness to Tom, he also said they didn't put the plows back on in the winter because crews complained about hoses getting caught behind them and hitting their knees on the sides plus the labor to take them on/off every summer and fall. Seems odd now given almost all modern units have plows year-round.
