Zoo Bridge Update

BNSF B&B and a private contractor made some nice progress this past week with the delivery of bridge parts.

BNSF Derailment

BNSF put one of their terminal SD40-2s on the ground just off Winter Street on the car shop lead and I happened to catch Hulcher taking all of five minutes to get it back on the rails. Figuring it probably took them 3+ hours to get here from Hudson it seems silly for a job that took a few minutes.

WGN Update

At the southern end of the TPR coverage we stopped by Spooner on the way back from a trip this weekend and checked on the status of Greg Vreeland's new depot north of town along highway 53. He plans to add a track here for his B&B sleeping car train as well as additional tracks for loading of passengers. The depot will have the classic lines of a small town station and be a big upgrade from the current Spooner facilities (offices, indoor seating, gift shop, nice restrooms, etc.). The increased visibility from highway 53 will add greatly to his business potential (he plans some big signs and you will be able to see the north end of the train from the highway). The nice pines will shelter the B&B train from the noise of the highway.

We also lucked out in that he is moving some stored freight cars this week and had just shifted his F7A out to Trego. The sun came out a few minutes after we arrived and the spring melt allowed for some really nice shots.

A Trio of Ore Trains the Past Week

Had the chance to get out and shoot a trio of ore trains along CN and Northshore Mining this week.  All trains were ore loads with trios of tunnel motors or SD40-2s.  Will share a shot from each train.

First up is the Bessemer Trio heading south from Fairlane through Munger.   This past week it seems as if the trio was on an ore load to Proctor each morning.

Later in the day, I had a few hours and was a nice sunny day for a drive so I headed to intercept the 403 which I heard on the Range Radio feed running from Minntac to Two Harbors.

Superior to Northtown Sucker Hole

Got lucky with yesterday's version of the Soup to Nuts. Sounded like he was ready to go around the regular time of 0600, but he was delayed and there was just enough sun fighting through the low clouds at Boylston to light up the cascade green 3-pack. Hope these 60Ms survived into the longer days of the year on the Northtown manifests.

Crawford Creek Comparison

On Twin Ports rail I posted one of the "new" CN SD60s crossing over Crawford Creek on the Missabe's former Interstate Branch on Tuesday.

Here is a comparison shot from over 11 years ago when the Missabe still owned the tracks.

Today's NS 1072 (Illinois Terminal) Sighting

Despite it being mostly cloudy it was nice to get out and capture the first known NS Heritage unit to visit the Twin Ports. We were lucky in that it was leading and that it came through here in daylight. Like most Galesburg-Grand Forks trains it took the wye at Boylston and headed west until Carlton when the DS told them to stop and run around their train and bring it back to Superior. We are guessing it was due to congestion on the Lakes Sub but I  don't know for sure.

My first shot was where the track curves east near Foxboro and there was actually some nice diffused sun here on the Hinckley Sub.

A Couple Trains From Tuesday

The clouds started to clear out on the Superior side of the Bay this morning so I went out to catch a late running A404 that had a repainted SD60 leading.

Here CN 5405 South crosses Crawford Creek with over 5000 tons of train for Stevens Point. Interesting to note the SD60F trailing. Been a long time since I have seen one of those.

Further down the Superior Sub after meeting two northbounds at EZ Siding.

More Trains & Ice

This past weekend was the DNR's "Take a Kid Ice Fishing" event where you didn't need a license if you were helping a kid under 16 ice fish. Didn't appear the fish were biting all that well but a nice day to be on the river. The ice is thick, or at least it appeared that way with this Ford parked on it.

SD70M-2 Saturday

Had a chance to get out for half a day around the Twin Ports with the CN busy with southbounds from the border. All three of the leaders I caught happened to be SD70M-2s.
